In June 2015, Crandon and I escorted a small group of 20 travellers to Norway and Spitsbergen, the largest island of the Svalbard archipelago, located above the Arctic Circle. This was such an exciting treat for me … back in the 80’s I backpacked through Scandinavia and absolutely fell in love with Norway. To be able to return to this breathtakingly beautiful part of the world with such a wonderful group of people was an incredible experience.

I will be returning to Norway and Spitsbergen with a small group of 12 guests in June 2018, and I invite you to join me.

A visit to the High Arctic is a visit to one of Earth’s last wilderness areas. June is early summer, and the arctic tundra is bursting with a rich collection of amazing wildlife and diverse flora. The northern sea ice is still thick, offering the local polar bears a rich hunting ground, and giving us the best chance of spotting one of these majestic creatures. 24 hours of continuous daylight offers endless opportunities to look for the little Svalbard reindeer, Arctic fox, walrus, seals, whales and many varieties of sea and land birds.

Our cruise will be aboard the small ship ‘MS Expedition’, taking up to 134 guests. This Ice Class 1B vessel is a comfortable and spacious expedition ship. All cabins have an ocean-facing window or porthole and private en-suite facilities. Large common areas and observation decks provide panoramic views of the region’s spectacular landscapes.

During the day we’ll go Zodiac cruising in small groups for exciting encounters with nature, then go ashore to take tundra walks or optional hikes. The onshore activities have several options based on your level of fitness, so everyone has the opportunity to enjoy the beauty of the Arctic.
Back on the ship, guests can listen to educational presentations about the region’s wildlife, geology and history, and at the end of each day, meet for fine food in the dining room and lively conversation in the lounge, recapping the day’s events.

This tour includes flights with Emirates and Scandinavian Airlines, breakfast daily in the hotels, a group dinner and all meals on the cruise. All your cruise excursions are included as well as waterproof boots to keep your feet dry onshore. You’ll also receive a high-performance expedition parka to keep you warm, yours to take home at the end of the cruise.

Pre-cruise we’ll have 2 nights in Longyearbyen, Spitsbergen’s capital, with the option of taking a dog sledding/carting excursion on the free day.
Post-cruise we have 3 nights in Oslo, including a morning city tour with entry to the Viking Ship Museum. We have a free day and I am happy to assist with other sightseeing options. Some of our guests have decided to extend their holiday in Norway after our tour, and I am able to help with flights, accommodation and other tours if desired.

My tour is starting to fill, with only 3 cabins remaining. This is a fantastic adventure for travellers of all ages, so if you are looking for a unique travel experience, why not come join me.
